Mr. Matt Binder
Matt grew up in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology and a minor in mathematics. He has since earned a Masters in Geoenvironmental Studies from Shippensburg University, where he did his graduate work at NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center. Matt has co-authored an e-textbook on ozone studies, and developed web-based educational resources for NASA environmental programs in the late 90’s.
Matt holds many certifications in Secondary Science, Media Technology, and English education, including a graduate Curriculum & Instruction certification from Penn State. For nearly 15 years, he has taught 8th grade Earth Science at Centerville Middle School in Lancaster, PA. While at Centreville Middle School, Matt helped launch the middle school television station WCMS. He currently teaches broadcasting & communications technology for the Hempfield School District. Beyond his media-related pursuits, Matt coaches extracurricular middle school chess and organizes the Friendship Chess League of south-central Pennsylvania. At night, he teaches a meteorology course at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC).
Additionally, Matt is also a private meteorological consultant with over 20 years of forecasting experience. He has worked as an on-air meteorologist for WYOU in Northeast Pennsylvania and WGAL in Central Pennsylvania.
Considering himself a “science geek and space nerd” at heart, Matt was selected as a finalist for NASA’s 2004 Astronaut Class. He currently serves on NASA’s Network of Educator Astronaut Teachers. Matt’s number one hobby is spending time with his young son and daughter. Both of them love to learn, travel, and do hands-on activities. If he ever gets a moment to himself, Matt’s hobbies include playing the trombone while performing with the New Holland Band, playing his violin, curling with the Philadelphia Curling Club, hiking, golfing, and watching the Phillies or Penn State sports teams. Having already visited all fifty states as well as parts of Australia, Europe, and Asia, Matt looks forward to the opportunity experience Russia through DPTV.
Bailey is currently a senior at Hempfield High School. He participates in the Communication Technology programs, exploring the many different angles of media, ranging from film to broadcast journalism. He has been enrolled in these programs for four years and plans to continue after graduating. In the future, he wants to go into television to impact the current world in a positive way.
Bailey comes from a family of eight children and has five younger siblings, 3 of whom are adopted. He enjoys being a role model to his siblings and hopes to share that with others. Bailey also loves music, and enjoys sharing his passion for it with others through singing or playing guitar at his youth group.
Kayleigh grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and is currently a student at Hempfield High School. At Hempfield, Kayleigh participates in many clubs and organizations, and is the captain of the Cross Country long-distance running team. She also participates in Hempfield’s miniTHON, an organization that raises money to aid in cancer research, and she currently holds the position of Communications Committee Overall. Kayleigh is also the President of Video Production Club, which organizes students to film various live events at Hempfield High School.
In her free time, Kayleigh enjoys running and spending time with her friends and family. She also enjoys creating news features and other video projects through Hempfield’s Communication Technology program. Kayleigh has been a part of this program for three years and in that time has completed five levels of this course. She enjoys traveling visting, Canada, several US states, and Ireland to see her grandparents and relatives.
Joel is a high school student at the Hempfield School District in Lancaster Pennsylvania. He enjoys many areas of study, including English and Fine Arts, but focuses most on his favorite subject, Communications Technology. He finds media, broadcast journalism, and film to be both challenging and exciting, but it is the constant learning and creativity throughout the process that he loves the most.
Joel spends much of his time on school work, but he is also invested in many extracurricular activities. He enjoys running with the Cross Country team, participating in theatre shows, attending his church’s youth group and serving the community, and hanging out with friends. Additionally, Joel works in the evenings as a Pharmaceutical Technician at Wiley’s Pharmacy.
When he is not in school, participating in extracurricular activities, or working, Joel loves to sit down to a good meal with his parents and two brothers. As a family, they enjoy hiking, going to the beach, and getting excited about football and baseball.
In the future, Joel plans to attend college for film production, as he would one day like to hold a job in the film and media industry.
Jack David Harrison
Jack was born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He has spent the past 12 years of his life in the Hempfield School District.
Jack was drawn to the Communications and Technology program at Hempfield High School. He currently holds the position of Executive Producer in the Video Production Club where he oversees film production and event planning. Jack is the President of the Hempfield Marching Knights Marching Band, a marching band with over 100 members. As president, Jack directs band events, band practice, membership, and supervises the executive council.
Outside of Hempfield, Jack is a Boy Scout in a local Troop at the rank of Life and is an aspiring Eagle Scout. Additionally, he serves as a Brotherhood member in the Boy Scout Honor Society. Over several summers, Jack worked at a Cub Scout Camp as a counselor for young boys, helping them grow up to be stronger scouts. Through scouting, Jack has been able to travel throughout North America to attend various Scout camps and participate in High Adventure programs.
With half of Jack’s family originally from England, and he tries to combine the heritage of a traditional English lifestyle with the spirit of American culture.
